Does anyone know what movie this is?

It involves an artist driving aimlessly in a red car and he runs into a bunch of weird locations and people (forgery museum where the forgeries are actually the real paintings, a town run almost entirely by lawyers, a woman who has with every guy she meets hoping to find the special one) with a recurring mysterious guy who points our hero in certain directions (turns out he's the forgery museum's owner's "dead" husband). He eventually finds a blond woman in the jail of the lawyer town and loses her later before she reappears at the end as someone who wants to hire him to paint a series of retro motels.
